Lady in the Water

A film by M Night Shyamalan

If you see these words on screen, be sure that you will either like the movie (be fascinated by it) or will find it slow and boring.

Lady in the Water is one such movie. M Night is commonly believed to be one of the few film makers who are in the Hitchcokian School of film making. The slow pans, simple characters playing the protagonists, all are common to the Hitchcock style.

Lady in the Water is all a bed time story. Well, those who do not understand "fantasy" will go to sleep possibly. M Night tells the story of a Lady who is actually a character in a Bed time story, who comes to the human world. And there are the forces which follow her into the world. To save her would mean learning the story, identifying the characters and finding the way for the lady to return, to her world.

I found the movie a little too slow and really feel M Night should stay behind the camera rather than in front of it, which he does pretty much in this movie. He is definitely a different film maker and is passionate about the story he tells. To appreciate such movies it takes some fascination for 'storytelling' and to be able to appreciate imagination.

Bryce Dallas Howard as The Lady-Story is very enticing and fresh. Paul Giammati does what he does well- Act. His role is very limited in terms of displaying his capability in variancy, but then he plays the simple character of Cleveland Heep, a caretaker in an aparment block with a host of interesting tenants, played by an ensemble of familiar faces.

Is the movie worth watching? Yes, on a Sunday afternoon. This movie will never go down in M Night's history as one of his best. Personally I am a big fan of The Sixth Sense and Unbreakable, but this one did disappoint a wee bit.
